IT interview questions, and how to answer them

IT interviews in India usually test fundamentals first and your hands-on troubleshooting second. Expect a mix of basics (networking, OS, databases) and "what would you do" support scenarios.

IT interview questions

  1. A user says the internet is not working. How do you troubleshoot it?

What they’re testing: A structured approach, not guesswork.

How to answer: Go layer by layer: physical connection, IP address (ipconfig), gateway ping, DNS (nslookup), then the application. Say what each check rules out.

  2. What is the difference between DNS and DHCP?

What they’re testing: Core networking fundamentals.

How to answer: DHCP hands a device its IP address and settings; DNS turns names like google.com into IP addresses. Give one example of each failing.

  3. How do you prioritise five urgent tickets at once?

What they’re testing: Judgement under pressure and SLA awareness.

How to answer: Rank by business impact and SLA, communicate timelines to each requester, fix the outage affecting most users first.

  4. Explain the difference between RAID 1 and RAID 5.

What they’re testing: Storage and backup basics.

How to answer: RAID 1 mirrors two disks for redundancy; RAID 5 stripes data with parity across three or more disks, balancing space and fault tolerance. RAID is not a backup.

  5. Write a SQL query to find duplicate email IDs in a users table.

    What they’re testing: Practical SQL.

How to answer: SELECT email, COUNT() FROM users GROUP BY email HAVING COUNT() > 1. Mention how you would then clean them safely.

How the interview usually runs

  1. Round 1Aptitude or online technical test
  2. Round 2Technical interview on fundamentals and tools
  3. Round 3Scenario or troubleshooting round
  4. Round 4HR and salary discussion

Questions, answered.

Are IT support interviews hard for freshers?

They focus on fundamentals and attitude. Freshers who can explain networking basics clearly and walk through a troubleshooting approach calmly do well.

Which certifications help in an IT interview?

CCNA, CompTIA A+ or an AWS/Azure fundamentals certificate help, but interviewers still test whether you can apply the basics to a real problem.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
