QA / Software Tester interview questions, and how to answer them

QA interviews test how you think about breaking software: test design, bug reporting and, for automation roles, your framework and code.

QA / Software Tester interview questions

  1. Write test cases for a login page.

What they’re testing: Test design thinking.

How to answer: Cover valid login, wrong password, empty fields, boundary lengths, SQL injection, locked account, remember me, password masking and session timeout.

  2. What is the difference between smoke and sanity testing?

What they’re testing: Terminology with meaning.

How to answer: Smoke checks a new build's core functions work at all; sanity checks a specific fix or area after a change.

  3. You found a bug the developer says is not a bug. What do you do?

    What they’re testing: Collaboration.

How to answer: Show clear reproduction steps and evidence, check the requirement together, and escalate to the product owner if it is still unclear.

  4. How do you handle dynamic elements in Selenium?

    What they’re testing: Automation skill.

How to answer: Use stable locators (relative XPath, data-test IDs), explicit waits instead of sleeps, and the Page Object Model.

  5. What makes a good bug report?

    What they’re testing: Communication.

How to answer: A clear title, steps to reproduce, expected vs actual result, environment, severity, priority and screenshots or logs.

How the interview usually runs

  1. Round 1Online test on testing concepts
  2. Round 2Manual testing and test design round
  3. Round 3Automation round (Selenium, API testing)

The follow-up they’ll use to test you

“How would you decide what to automate first?”

Expect a strategy follow-up. Automate stable, repetitive, high-risk flows like regression and smoke suites first.

Is coding required for QA tester interviews?

For manual roles, basic SQL is enough. For automation roles, expect Java or Python coding and framework questions.

Which automation tool should I learn for QA interviews?

Selenium is still the most listed in India; Playwright and Cypress are growing. API testing with Postman is asked in almost every round.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
