Software Developer interview questions, and how to answer them
Software developer interviews test three things: how you solve problems in code, how well you understand the systems you have built, and how you work with a team.
Software Developer interview questions
Find the first non-repeating character in a string.
What they’re testing: Hashing and complexity thinking.
How to answer: Count characters in a hash map in one pass, then scan the string again for the first count of 1. O(n) time, O(k) space. State the brute force first, then improve.
What happens when you type a URL into the browser?
What they’re testing: End-to-end understanding of the web.
How to answer: DNS lookup, TCP and TLS handshake, HTTP request, server processing, response, then browser parsing and rendering. Go deeper on whichever part you know best.
Explain the difference between a process and a thread.
What they’re testing: OS fundamentals.
How to answer: A process has its own memory space; threads share their process's memory. Threads are lighter but need synchronisation to avoid race conditions.
How would you design a URL shortener?
What they’re testing: Basic system design.
How to answer: Clarify scale, generate short IDs (base62 of a counter or hash), store the mapping in a key-value store, cache hot links, handle redirects with 301/302.
Tell me about a bug that took you the longest to fix.
What they’re testing: Debugging approach and honesty.
How to answer: Describe how you narrowed it down (logs, reproduction, bisecting), the root cause and what you changed so it would not recur.
How the interview usually runs
- Round 1Online coding test (DSA)
- Round 2Technical round: data structures and problem solving
- Round 3Project and system design discussion
- Round 4Managerial or HR round
Must-know topics
The follow-up they’ll use to test you
“Can you do it in less memory?”
After a working solution, expect an optimisation push. Talk through trade-offs out loud before coding the change.
Software Developer interview preparation course
Ambo builds your Software Developer course from your resume and the role you want: every must-know topic above, Interview Q&A at the end of each lesson and a deep dive on your own projects. Pick a crash course (10 days), interview perspective (14) or depth learning (20).
How Upskill worksSoftware Developer certification
TickBig Certified Software Developer. Three camera-proctored rounds: an objective test, hands-on tasks for the role and a voice interview with Ambo. Pass all three to earn a seal recruiters can verify, valid for 12 months.
Your projects will be grilled
For each project on your resume, be ready to explain the architecture, one hard technical decision and what you would change today.

Questions, answered.
How much DSA do I need for a software developer interview?
Product companies test DSA heavily; service companies test fundamentals and projects more. Arrays, strings, hashing, trees and basic DP cover most rounds.
Should I learn system design as a fresher?
Basic design concepts help: APIs, databases, caching and scaling. Deep system design is usually expected from about 3 years of experience.
How is this different from a list of interview questions?
A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.
What is the certification test?
Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
