DevOps Engineer interview questions, and how to answer them

DevOps interviews are practical: expect to explain pipelines you built, debug a broken deployment and reason about reliability.

DevOps Engineer interview questions

  1. A pod keeps restarting. How do you debug it?

    What they’re testing: Kubernetes troubleshooting.

How to answer: kubectl describe pod for events, kubectl logs (and --previous), check probes, resource limits (OOMKilled), image and config.

  2. What is the difference between a Docker image and a container?

    What they’re testing: Container basics.

How to answer: An image is a read-only template; a container is a running instance of it with its own writable layer.

  3. How do you achieve zero-downtime deployments?

    What they’re testing: Release strategy.

How to answer: Rolling updates with readiness probes, blue-green or canary releases, plus a fast rollback path and backward-compatible database changes.

  4. Why use Terraform instead of clicking in the console?

    What they’re testing: IaC thinking.

How to answer: Infrastructure becomes versioned, reviewable and repeatable; state tracks what exists, and plan shows changes before applying.

  5. Production is down at 2 a.m. What do you do?

    What they’re testing: Incident handling.

How to answer: Acknowledge, assess impact, check recent deploys and dashboards, mitigate first (rollback), communicate, then run a blameless post-mortem.

How the interview usually runs

  1. Round 1Linux and scripting test
  2. Round 2CI/CD, containers and cloud round
  3. Round 3Scenario round: outages and troubleshooting
  4. Round 4Managerial or HR round

Questions, answered.

Is Kubernetes required for DevOps interviews?

For most mid-level roles, yes. Freshers should at least know Docker, basic Kubernetes objects and one CI/CD tool.

Which cloud should I prepare for a DevOps interview?

AWS is the most common in Indian job descriptions, then Azure. Core services, IAM and networking matter more than memorising every service.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
