Python Developer interview questions, and how to answer them

Python interviews check that you write clean, idiomatic Python and understand what happens under the hood, then test the frameworks and data work on your resume.

Python Developer interview questions

  1. What is the difference between a list and a tuple?

What they’re testing: Mutability and when to use each.

How to answer: Lists are mutable, tuples are immutable and hashable, so tuples can be dict keys. Tuples are slightly faster and signal fixed data.

  2. Explain decorators with an example.

What they’re testing: Functions as first-class objects.

How to answer: A decorator is a function that takes a function and returns a wrapped one, for example a timing or login-required decorator. Mention functools.wraps.

  3. What is the GIL and how does it affect performance?

    What they’re testing: Concurrency understanding.

How to answer: The Global Interpreter Lock lets one thread run Python bytecode at a time, so threads help I/O-bound work but not CPU-bound work, where multiprocessing helps.

  4. What is the output of a function with a mutable default argument?

What they’re testing: A classic Python trap.

How to answer: Default arguments are evaluated once, so a default list is shared across calls. Use None and create the list inside the function.

  5. How would you speed up a slow Python script?

    What they’re testing: Practical optimisation.

How to answer: Profile first (cProfile), then use better data structures, vectorise with NumPy/pandas, cache results, or move I/O to async.

How the interview usually runs

  1. Round 1Online coding test
  2. Round 2Python fundamentals and problem solving
  3. Round 3Framework (Django/Flask/FastAPI) and project round
  4. Round 4HR round

Must-know topics

Data types, mutability, list vs tuple vs set vs dictComprehensions, generators and iteratorsDecorators, context managers and *args/**kwargsThe GIL, threading vs multiprocessing vs asyncioOOP, dunder methods and modulesDjango/Flask/FastAPI, ORM and REST APIs

The follow-up they’ll use to test you

“When would you use a generator instead of a list?”

Interviewers like memory follow-ups. Explain lazy evaluation and processing large files line by line.

Python Developer interview preparation course

Ambo builds your Python Developer course from your resume and the role you want: every must-know topic above, Interview Q&A at the end of each lesson and a deep dive on your own projects. Pick a crash course (10 days), interview perspective (14) or depth learning (20).

How Upskill works

Python Developer certification

TickBig Certified Python Developer. Three camera-proctored rounds: an objective test, hands-on tasks for the role and a voice interview with Ambo. Pass all three to earn a seal recruiters can verify, valid for 12 months.

Your projects will be grilled

Be ready to explain your project's structure, how you tested it, and one performance or data problem you solved.

Questions, answered.

Do Python interviews include DSA?

Yes, most include a coding round. Use Python's strengths (dicts, sets, collections) to write short, correct solutions.

Which framework should I prepare for a Python developer interview?

Prepare whichever is on your resume in depth. Django and FastAPI are the most common in Indian job descriptions.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
