Java Developer interview questions, and how to answer them

Java interviews go deep on core Java and the JVM, then move to Spring Boot, databases and the projects on your resume.

Java Developer interview questions

  1. How does HashMap work internally?

What they’re testing: Core Java depth.

How to answer: An array of buckets indexed by the key's hash; collisions go into a linked list that turns into a balanced tree after 8 entries (Java 8+). Mention equals/hashCode and resizing at the load factor.

  2. What is the difference between == and equals()?

What they’re testing: Fundamentals and the String pool.

How to answer: == compares references; equals() compares content when overridden. Explain why two string literals can be == but new String() objects are not.

  3. Explain how @Transactional works in Spring.

What they’re testing: Real Spring experience.

How to answer: Spring wraps the bean in a proxy that opens a transaction, commits on success and rolls back on runtime exceptions. Self-invocation bypasses the proxy, a common trap.

  4. How do you handle a slow API in production?

What they’re testing: Debugging in real systems.

How to answer: Measure first (logs, APM, slow-query log), find the bottleneck (DB, N+1 queries, external calls), then fix with indexes, caching, pagination or async processing.

  5. What is the difference between synchronized and ReentrantLock?

    What they’re testing: Concurrency understanding.

How to answer: Both give mutual exclusion; ReentrantLock adds tryLock, timeouts, fairness and interruptible locking, but you must unlock in finally.

How the interview usually runs

  1. Round 1Online test: Java MCQs and coding
  2. Round 2Core Java and OOP technical round
  3. Round 3Spring Boot, microservices and project round
  4. Round 4Managerial or HR round

Must-know topics

OOP, interfaces vs abstract classesCollections: HashMap internals, ArrayList vs LinkedListMultithreading, synchronisation and ExecutorServiceJVM memory, garbage collection, String poolJava 8+: streams, lambdas, OptionalSpring Boot, REST, JPA/Hibernate, microservices

The follow-up they’ll use to test you

“What happens if two threads put into that HashMap at once?”

Expect concurrency follow-ups on any collection answer. Mention ConcurrentHashMap and why HashMap is not thread-safe.

Java Developer interview preparation course

Ambo builds your Java Developer course from your resume and the role you want: every must-know topic above, Interview Q&A at the end of each lesson and a deep dive on your own projects. Pick a crash course (10 days), interview perspective (14) or depth learning (20).

How Upskill works

Java Developer certification

TickBig Certified Java Developer. Three camera-proctored rounds: an objective test, hands-on tasks for the role and a voice interview with Ambo. Pass all three to earn a seal recruiters can verify, valid for 12 months.

Your projects will be grilled

Know your project's service boundaries, how services talk (REST, Kafka), how you handled failures, and your own contribution in numbers.

  4. 4You practise, then get certifiedInterview Q&A after every lesson, then three proctored rounds ending in a voice interview with Ambo.

Questions, answered.

Which Java topics are asked most in interviews?

OOP, Collections (especially HashMap), multithreading, exceptions, Java 8 streams and Spring Boot come up in almost every Java interview.

Is Spring Boot mandatory for Java developer roles?

For most backend Java roles in India, yes. Interviewers expect REST APIs, dependency injection, JPA and basic microservices knowledge.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
