Data Scientist interview questions, and how to answer them
Data science interviews test statistics and ML fundamentals, your coding, and whether you can explain a model's business value, not just its accuracy.
Data Scientist interview questions
Explain the bias-variance trade-off.
What they’re testing: Core ML intuition.
How to answer: Simple models underfit (high bias); complex ones overfit (high variance). Use cross-validation and regularisation to find the balance.
Your fraud model has 99% accuracy. Is it good?
What they’re testing: Metrics on imbalanced data.
How to answer: Not necessarily: if 1% of cases are fraud, predicting 'no fraud' always gives 99%. Look at precision, recall and the cost of each error.
How do random forest and gradient boosting differ?
What they’re testing: Ensemble methods.
How to answer: Random forests average many independent trees to reduce variance; boosting builds trees in sequence, each correcting the last, reducing bias.
What is data leakage? Give an example.
What they’re testing: Real-world modelling judgement.
How to answer: Training on information unavailable at prediction time, like a 'refund issued' column when predicting churn. It inflates offline scores.
How would you explain your model to a business manager?
What they’re testing: Communication.
How to answer: Lead with the decision it improves and its impact in money or time, then show the top drivers simply.
How the interview usually runs
- Round 1Coding and SQL test
- Round 2Statistics and ML fundamentals round
- Round 3Case study or take-home model
- Round 4Project deep dive and HR round
Must-know topics
The follow-up they’ll use to test you
“How would you monitor this model after deployment?”
Expect production follow-ups: data drift, performance tracking and retraining triggers.
Data Scientist interview preparation course
Ambo builds your Data Scientist course from your resume and the role you want: every must-know topic above, Interview Q&A at the end of each lesson and a deep dive on your own projects. Pick a crash course (10 days), interview perspective (14) or depth learning (20).
How Upskill worksData Scientist certification
TickBig Certified Data Scientist. Three camera-proctored rounds: an objective test, hands-on tasks for the role and a voice interview with Ambo. Pass all three to earn a seal recruiters can verify, valid for 12 months.
Your projects will be grilled
For every model on your resume know the data size, baseline, metric chosen and why, and the business result.
Data Scientist resume guideHow Ambo trains you for your Data Scientist interview
- 1Ambo reads your resumeYour skills, projects, years and the role you want next.
- 2Then where you’re interviewingAnd how interviewers there question people like you.
- 3It maps every topic they could askMust-know first, your own projects included, built into short daily lessons.
- 4You practise, then get certifiedInterview Q&A after every lesson, then three proctored rounds ending in a voice interview with Ambo.
Questions, answered.
Do data scientist interviews ask about GenAI now?
Increasingly. Expect basics of LLMs, embeddings and retrieval-augmented generation alongside classical ML.
Is a Kaggle project enough for a data scientist interview?
It helps, but interviewers value a project with a real business question, messy data and a clear decision at the end.
How is this different from a list of interview questions?
A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.
What is the certification test?
Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
