Finance interview questions, and how to answer them

Finance interviews test accounting fundamentals, financial statement analysis and how you use numbers to guide decisions.

Finance interview questions

  1. Walk me through how the three financial statements are connected.

What they’re testing: Core finance understanding.

How to answer: Net income from the P&L flows into retained earnings on the balance sheet and starts the cash flow statement; cash at the end ties back to the balance sheet.

  2. If depreciation increases by ₹100, what happens to the statements?

    What they’re testing: Applied accounting.

How to answer: Profit before tax falls ₹100, net income falls by ₹100 less tax, cash flow rises by the tax saved, and assets fall by ₹100.

  3. Our costs are 15% over budget. How would you analyse it?

    What they’re testing: Variance analysis.

How to answer: Break the variance by cost head and by price vs volume, find the drivers, separate one-offs from trends and recommend actions.

  4. What is working capital and why does it matter?

    What they’re testing: Liquidity thinking.

How to answer: Current assets minus current liabilities; it shows whether the company can run day-to-day operations without a cash crunch.

  5. Explain NPV in simple words.

    What they’re testing: Investment decisions.

How to answer: The value today of future cash flows minus the investment. A positive NPV means the project earns more than the cost of capital.
