Electrical Engineer interview questions, and how to answer them

Electrical engineering interviews test circuits and machines fundamentals, power systems and safe, practical work on equipment.

Electrical Engineer interview questions

  1. Why is power factor important and how do you improve it?

    What they’re testing: Applied fundamentals.

How to answer: Low power factor means more current for the same useful power, raising losses and bills. Improve it with capacitor banks or synchronous condensers.

  2. Why is a transformer rated in kVA, not kW?

    What they’re testing: Machines knowledge.

How to answer: Its losses depend on voltage and current, not the load's power factor, so it is rated by apparent power.

  3. What is the purpose of earthing?

    What they’re testing: Safety.

How to answer: To give fault current a safe path to ground, protecting people and equipment and letting protection devices trip.

  4. A motor is overheating. What could be wrong?

    What they’re testing: Troubleshooting.

How to answer: Overload, voltage imbalance, single phasing, poor ventilation, bearing problems or wrong supply voltage.

  5. What is the difference between an MCB and an RCCB?

    What they’re testing: Protection devices.

How to answer: An MCB trips on overload and short circuit; an RCCB trips on earth leakage current to prevent shocks.

How the interview usually runs

  1. Round 1Aptitude and technical test
  2. Round 2Core technical round
  3. Round 3Practical or site discussion
  4. Round 4HR round

Must-know topics

The follow-up they’ll use to test you

“How would you work on that panel safely?”

Expect a safety follow-up: isolate, lock out and tag out, verify zero voltage and use PPE.

Electrical Engineer interview preparation course

Ambo builds your Electrical Engineer course from your resume and the role you want: every must-know topic above, Interview Q&A at the end of each lesson and a deep dive on your own projects. Pick a crash course (10 days), interview perspective (14) or depth learning (20).

How Upskill works

Electrical Engineer certification

TickBig Certified Electrical Engineer. Three camera-proctored rounds: an objective test, hands-on tasks for the role and a voice interview with Ambo. Pass all three to earn a seal recruiters can verify, valid for 12 months.

Your projects will be grilled

Explain your project or internship with the equipment involved, ratings and what you designed or fixed.

How Ambo trains you for your Electrical Engineer interview

  1. 1Ambo reads your resumeYour skills, projects, years and the role you want next.
  2. 2Then where you’re interviewingAnd how interviewers there question people like you.
  3. 3It maps every topic they could askMust-know first, your own projects included, built into short daily lessons.
  4. 4You practise, then get certifiedInterview Q&A after every lesson, then three proctored rounds ending in a voice interview with Ambo.

Questions, answered.

Do electrical interviews ask about PLCs?

For automation and manufacturing roles, yes: basic ladder logic and I/O concepts.

Which topics matter most for electrical core interviews?

Machines, power systems, protection and safety are asked most often.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
