Civil Engineer interview questions, and how to answer them

Civil engineering interviews test design basics, site knowledge and how you manage quality, quantities and safety on a project.

Civil Engineer interview questions

  1. What is the difference between M20 and M25 concrete?

    What they’re testing: Material basics.

How to answer: The number is the characteristic compressive strength in N/mm² at 28 days; M25 is stronger and used for more demanding members.

  2. How do you check concrete quality on site?

    What they’re testing: Site practice.

How to answer: Slump test for workability, cube tests at 7 and 28 days, and checking curing and placement.

  3. Why is curing important?

    What they’re testing: Fundamentals.

How to answer: It keeps concrete moist so hydration continues, giving strength and reducing cracks.

  4. How do you prepare a BOQ?

    What they’re testing: Estimation.

How to answer: Break the drawings into items, measure quantities, apply rates and add a summary with assumptions.

  5. Tell me about a problem you faced on site.
