Operations interview questions, and how to answer them

Operations interviews test how you keep processes running: planning, metrics, problem solving and managing people on the ground.

Operations interview questions

  1. Deliveries are delayed by 20% this month. What do you do?

What they’re testing: Structured problem solving.

How to answer: Find where in the process delays happen, find the root cause (staffing, routing, vendor), fix the biggest one and track daily.

  2. How do you write a good SOP?

    What they’re testing: Process discipline.

How to answer: Clear steps in order, owners, timelines, exceptions and how quality is checked, tested with the people who use it.

  3. Explain the 5 Whys with an example.

What they’re testing: Root cause method.

How to answer: Keep asking why until you reach a fixable root cause, for example late orders traced back to a missing stock alert.

  4. How do you manage a team that misses targets?

    What they’re testing: People leadership.

How to answer: Check whether targets and training are realistic, coach individuals, remove blockers and review progress often.

  5. Which KPIs did you track in your last role?

    What they’re testing: Metrics ownership.

How to answer: Name them, the targets, and one you improved with numbers.

Is Six Sigma certification useful for operations roles?

A Green Belt helps, especially when paired with a real improvement project you can explain.

What do operations interviews test most?

Problem solving, comfort with numbers and how you manage people and processes under pressure.

How is this different from a list of interview questions?

A list is the same for everyone. Ambo builds your course from your resume, your target role and where you're interviewing, then writes every lesson from the interviewer's point of view: what they'll ask, a strong answer, and the follow-up they'll use to test you.

What is the certification test?

Three camera-proctored rounds that unlock one after another: an objective round, a hands-on round (coding or practical tasks for your role) and a voice interview with Ambo, who asks live follow-ups on your answers. Pass all three within 14 days to become TickBig Certified for 12 months.
