Resume for Freshers: A Step-by-Step Guide (With Examples)
How freshers can write a strong one-page resume using education, projects, internships and skills, with examples you can adapt.
Writing your first resume can feel impossible. How do you fill a page when you don't have work experience? The good news: recruiters hiring freshers aren't looking for years of experience. They're looking for potential, skills and proof you can learn.
The ideal fresher resume structure
- Name and contact: phone, email, city, LinkedIn and portfolio or GitHub (if you have one).
- Career objective: 2 lines, tailored to the role.
- Education: degree, college, year, and score if it's strong.
- Projects: your strongest section if you're from a technical or creative field.
- Internships and training.
- Skills: technical and soft skills relevant to the role.
- Certifications.
- Achievements and activities.
Keep it to one page.
Step 1: Write a sharp career objective
Avoid generic lines like "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation". Be specific.
Example (engineering): "Computer Science graduate skilled in Java, SQL and React, with two full-stack projects and a 3-month internship. Looking to start as a software developer in a product team."
Example (commerce): "B.Com graduate with hands-on Tally and GST experience from an internship at a CA firm. Looking for an accounts executive role."
Step 2: Make projects do the talking
For each project, write:
- what you built
- tools you used
- a result or what you learnt
Example: "Expense tracker web app (React, Node.js, MongoDB). Built login, budgeting and charts; used by 40 classmates during a semester."
Step 3: Show internships with impact
"Marketing intern, XYZ Startup (3 months): planned and posted 30 Instagram posts; grew followers by 18%."
Step 4: Choose skills that match the job
Read the job description and list skills you genuinely have that match it. Group them: Technical, Tools and Languages.
Step 5: Add achievements and activities
Hackathons, college fests, leadership roles, sports and volunteering all show initiative, teamwork and responsibility.
Mistakes freshers make
- Two or more pages of filler.
- Generic objectives.
- Listing hobbies before projects.
- Spelling mistakes, an instant red flag.
- Fancy templates that ATS can't read. → ATS-friendly resume guide
